  29. 1. INSTALLATION NOTES

  31. 1.1 Minimum System Requirements for Palm Sync
  32. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  33. Palm Sync requires that you have a 3Com Connected Organizer
  34. running Palm OS 2.0 or later. You must have the MacPac version 2
  35. installed on your computer. You can download the MacPac version 2
  36. from:

  44. Note: You do not need to download the USB fix if you are using
  45. Palm(TM) Desktop version 2.5.

  48. 1.2 International
  49. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  50. Palm Sync is only supported on the US release of Outlook Express
  51. 5. It may work on European localized versions, however, the MacPac
  52. version 2 software is not localized and is only available in
  53. English.

  55. 1.3 Installation

  58. >>>To install Palm Sync for Outlook Express 5:

  60. 1. Open the Extras folder in the Outlook Express 5 Folder.
  61. 2. Launch the Palm Sync Installer
  62.  
  63. An OEConduit file will be placed in your Conduits folder in the
  64. Palm folder.
  65.  
  66. Note: If you use Palm Sync in Outlook Express 5 or Outlook Express 5.01
  67. you must run the Palm Sync Installer contained in the Extras folder in
  68. the Outlook Express 5.02 folder.

  70. 1.4 Synchronizing with Palm(TM) Desktop
  71. ------------------------------------------------------------------

  73. You cannot synchronize contacts stored in your Palm Organizer with
  74. both Outlook Express 5 and Palm(TM) Desktop.

  76. >>>To disable contact synchronization with Palm Desktop:

  78. 1. Launch the HotSync program on your Macintosh.
  79. 2. On the HotSync menu, click Conduit Settings.
  80. 3. Double-click the Address Book conduit.
  81. 4. To save a copy of your Palm Organizer data in Palm Desktop,
  82. when you synchronize with Outlook Express, click Handheld
  83. overwrites Macintosh and then click Make Default.. Any changes you
  84. make to data in Palm Desktop will not affect the data in your Palm
  85. Organizer.

  87. To synchronize your Palm Organizer data with Outlook Express,
  88. without saving a copy of the data in Palm Desktop, click Do
  89. Nothing, and then click Make Default.

  93. 2. CONFIGURATION

  95. 2.1 Setup

  97. Once you run the Palm Sync Installer you can configure Outlook
  98. Exress to Sync with a Palm Organizer. The Configuration options
  99. for Palm Sync are not located in the HotSync application, but in
  100. Outlook Express 5.

  102. >>>To configure Outlook Express 5 for Palm Sync:

  104. 1. Launch Outlook Express 5
  105. 2. Select Palm Sync Setup from the File Menu
  106. 3. Check Enable Palm Synchronization
  107. 4. Configure your Sync options

  109. You can now proceed with Synchronization.

  111. 2.2 Synchronizing with Multiple Outlook Express Identities
  112. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  113. If you are using the multiple identities feature in Outlook
  114. Express, the name of your Outlook Express identity must be the
  115. same as your Palm user name for synchronization to occur.

  119. 1. Launch the HotSync program on your Macintosh.
  120. 2. On the HotSync menu, click Edit Users. The Users window appears
  121. and lists Palm user names for your Palm Organizer.
  122. 3. In the Users window, identify your Palm user name.
  123. 4. Rename your Outlook Express identity to match your Palm user
  124. name.

  127. >>>To rename an Outlook Express identity:

  129. 1. Launch Outlook Express 5.
  130. 2. On the File Menu, click Switch Identity.
  131. 3. Click the identity you want to rename, and then click Rename.
  132. 4. Type a new name for the identity.

  134. Note: An identity name can contain up to 20 characters, including
  135. spaces.

  137. 2.3 Synchronizing with Multiple Palm Organizers
  138. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  139. If you want to synchronize more than one Palm Organizer with your
  140. Macintosh, you need to rename the Main Identity in Outlook Express
  141. so that it is the same name as the Palm user you want to
  142. synchronize Outlook Express data with. Failure to do so may result
  143. in unwanted data duplication.

  147. 1. Launch Outlook Express 5.
  148. 2. On the File menu, click Switch Identity.
  149. 3. Click Main Identity, and then click Rename.
  150. 4. Type the Palm user name you want to synchronize Outlook Express
  151. data with.

  153. 2.4 Synchronization Options
  154. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  155. The Outlook Express Conduit has four different Synchronization
  156. options. These options are configured from the Palm Sync Setup
  157. dialog of Outlook Express. To display this dialog, click Palm Sync
  158. Setup on the File Menu.

  160. Note: To Synchronize a Palm contact with an Outlook Express
  161. contact, the Sync with Palm Organizer check box must be selected
  162. in the Outlook Express contact.

  164. Synchronize
  165. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  166. Changes that have occurred in Outlook Express and the Palm are
  167. synchronized. If both contacts have been modified, they will be
  168. duplicated on the Palm Organizer and in Outlook Express. An error
  169. will appear in the HotSync log.

  171. Outlook Express 5 overwrites Palm
  172. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  173. All the data in the Palm Organizer will be replaced by the
  174. contacts in Outlook Express 5. Any changes you make on the Palm
  175. Organizer will not affect Outlook Express 5.

  177. Palm overwrites Outlook Express 5
  178. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  179. All the data in Outlook Express 5 will be replaced by the contacts
  180. in the Palm Organizer. Any changes you make in Outlook Express 5
  181. will not affect the Palm Organizer.

  187. 3. TROUBLESHOOTING

  189. 3.1 Problems Synchronizing with Outlook Express 5
  190. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  191. There could be a number of reasons why you may have problems
  192. synchronizing contacts with Outlook Express 5. First, check the
  193. HotSync log to determine what the error is. This log file can be
  194. accessed from the HotSync menu in the HotSync manager application
  195. on your Macintosh.

  197. If you are synchronizing and you feel that none of the changes
  198. that you have made are getting transferred you may need to force
  199. the conduit to perform a SLOW SYNC.

  201. >>>To Perform a SLOW SYNC:

  203. 1. Press the HotSync button on your Palm Organizer
  204. 2. Hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard until you see the OE
  205. Conduit appear that it is synchronizing.
